The reality about the use of 1:1 devices in D181

learning Apps are largely gamified, short form content
Digital overstimulation spikes dopamine and reduces ability to focus. The gamified content leads some children to mindlessly click to “achieve” digital rewards (points, badges) instead of thinking critically. Parents need more transparency to screen usage and children need strict time limits.
device usage is inconsistent across the district
There is no published district wide policy establishing screen time standards by grade and subject area. Some teachers use devices less intentionally than others. For example, offering additional screen time if students finish work early.
Inadequate guardrails on devices
Starting in kindergarten children are given devices to take home. Devices are not strictly limited to vetted “educational” apps. At home parents struggle to understand if their children are doing assigned schoolwork or playing on their school issued device. Many parents are concerned when they examine the browser history and photos on the device.
