Detailed list of guardrails to evaluate in order to prevent misuse of school issued devices:
Replacing “blocking” or “blacklist” approach to a default deny or “whitelisting” strategy, restricting access to only explicitly approved educational sites and apps. Deny broad access to YouTube: require videos not explicitly on teacher approval list to be blocked. Publish the current allowlist so parents know exactly what's accessible.
Disabling Guest Mode, Incognito Mode, and personal accounts, which let students bypass filtering entirely
Blocking any app, including educational apps, that contains chat or messaging features — these can expose kids to strangers and inappropriate content regardless of the app's primary purpose
Disabling use of cameras and audio recording
Implementing school wide device lock down during recess and lunch
Give parents and students a simple, formal channel to report inappropriate content or apps encountered on school devices
